Mike Huckabee, Former Arkansas governor and probable presidential candidate in 2012, speaks out about the potential fallout of the decision to try suspected terrorists in civilian courts. Huckabee claims that the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) and the other four defendents in New York City will be as much of a trial for Obama’s administration as it is for the terrorist suspects. He holds the view that, because of the rules of civilian court, there is a chance that the suspects could get off on a technicality. If that were to happen, Huckabee asserts that not only would Obama’s presidency be over but the entire Democratic party would be “finished”.

Mike Huckabee shares the concern that others have voiced that by trying war criminals in civilian court, our government increases the chance that the suspects will be acquitted on technicalities. Even though Huckabee’s comments refer to the specific trial of Khalid Shiekh Mohammed and his co-defendents, his statements also apply to the question of the wisdom of the U.S. Senate’s vote in October that paved the way for such trials. Huckabee focuses on the political consequences to President Obama and his party if the policy backfires and guilty terrorists are acquitted. This article serves the purpose of demonstrating the importance of the decision to grant terrorist suspects civil trials by pointing out that the success or failure of the policy will determine the success or failure, not only of Obama’s presidency, but also the Democratic Party as a whole.
